Undergraduate programs in the Computing and Information Sciences Department of Kansas State University consist of two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Information Systems and one in Computer Science. The Computer Science degree is broken down into two options: a Computer Science option and a Software Engineering option. Additionally, the department offers an undergraduate minor in Computer Science.
The Bachelor of Science in Information Systems degree is perfect for students who are looking to learn how to build and administer web servers, computer networks, and enterprise information systems. In addition, students learn programming skills such as those used by system administrators and developers.
Core courses include courses in computing science, computer engineering, and software design. There are advanced courses in enterprise information systems, computer security, and C/C++ programming to name a few. Students also must take courses in communications, writing, humanities and social sciences, and natural sciences to round out the curriculum.
The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with Computer Science Option degree is more academic than vocational. It is designed for students who are considering further graduate education in Computer Science and want a liberal education.
The advanced courses for this option differ from the software engineering option as they include courses in programming languages, operating systems, and database system concepts.
The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with Software Engineering Option degree is more vocational than academic. It is designed for students who are looking to get started right away with a career in software engineering. The advanced courses include courses in software engineering, enterprise information systems, and parallel programming.
There are 26 faculty members in the Computing and Information Sciences Department of Kansas State University. These instructors and professors teach to small class sizes in the striking building of Nichols Hall. 92% of Kansas State University’s classes have less than 50 students.

The Computing and Information Sciences Department of Kansas State University offers two Masters degrees. One is the Master of Science and the other is the Master of Software Engineering.
The Master of Science is designed to prepare students for advanced positions in the computer industry or for additional academic studies. The degree program requires 30 hours of graduate level coursework after a student has obtained their undergraduate degree.
There are three options to complete the program: a thesis option, a report option, and a non-thesis/non-report option. The non-thesis/non-report option requires 33 hours of graduate level coursework instead of 30.
The Master of Software Engineering degree is designed to prepare students to design, specify, implement, maintain, and document large software systems. This degree is offered both online and on-campus. This degree requires 33 hours of graduate level coursework and a project where the student displays their mastery of software engineering techniques and processes.
One doctoral program is offered in Computer Science. This program consists of a research-oriented curriculum that is designed to enable students to perform advanced research and to teach at the university level in the computing field. 90 credits total are required for the Ph.D., 30 of those credits are satisfied by the Master’s degree and an additional 24 credits beyond that are needed. The remaining credits are fulfilled by dissertation research. The dissertation must be defended at a final exam.
