The University of South Carolina is a public university that was founded in the year 1801. It is ranked number 106 in the U.S. News & World Report 2019 edition of Best Colleges. It is considerably less expensive to attend the University of South Carolina if you live in-state already, with yearly tuition at only $12,200 for the 2017 – 2018 school year as compared to the out of state tuition of $32,300 for the same time period. Students at the University of South Carolina must spend their first year living on campus and take a course called University 101 which was pioneered by the University of South Carolina to help students adjust to college life. The University of South Carolina is located in the city of Columbia, South Carolina and is near to other college towns such as Charleston, South Carolina and Charlotte, North Carolina.
There are 24 full-time faculty members serving the needs of 450 undergraduate students and 120 graduate students. Ten of these faculty members have received NSF CAREER awards.
When the University of South Carolina reviews applications, they pay attention to SAT or ACT score and GPA and may also take additional factors into consideration such as outstanding extracurricular activities, extraordinary personal circumstances, evidence of leadership, and special talents. 75% of the incoming class of 2018 had GPAs of 3.78 or higher and 1200 and up on the SAT or 25 or higher on the ACT.

Undergraduate programs in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of South Carolina include undergraduate majors, undergraduate minors, and undergraduate double majors. Undergraduate majors include computer engineering, computer science, and computer information systems. Undergraduate minors include computer science and applied computing. There is also an undergraduate double major in math and computer science.
The B.S.E. in Computer Engineering is designed for students who are interested both in hardware and in programming. The necessary classes cover topics such as computer science, software engineering, and digital and electric circuit designs. In addition, students must take core courses in English, foreign language, and ethics among other requirements.
The B.S. degree in Computer Science prepares students to work with titles such as systems analysts, software engineers, and systems designers among other titles. This degree is designed for students who wish to learn how to develop large complex software through utilizing the latest technologies or those students who are interested in learning computation. This major also prepares students for further post-baccalaureate education.
The B.S. degree in Computer Information Systems combines business classes with those in the areas of computer networks, security, computer programming, and information assurance. The University of South Carolina offers a cybersecurity specialization that complements this major nicely. This degree prepares students for a career in computer information systems as well as for post-baccalaureate education.

The Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of South Carolina offers three Masters programs including Master of Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering, Master of Science in Software Engineering, and Master of Science in Computer Science and Engineering.
The M.E. in Computer Science and Engineering requires students to complete an additional thirty hours of coursework after completing their B.S. This coursework must include the core classes of compiler construction, computer architecture, analysis of algorithms, and seminar in advances in computing. Additionally, 12 hours in CSCE courses that are numbered 700 and above must be taken.
Students taking the M.S. in Software Engineering program should have a minimum of one year of experience in the field of software engineering such as software maintenance or development. This degree requires thirty hours of coursework. The coursework includes fifteen hours of software engineering courses including required core coursework such as software engineering and software architectures among others and an additional fifteen hours of approved electives.
The M.S. in Computer Science and Engineering only requires 24 hours of coursework, however it also includes six hours of thesis preparation and a thesis. The core coursework is the same as for the M.E. in Computer Science and Engineering. The student taking this program must defend their thesis in a public presentation.
There is one doctoral program in the Computer Science and Engineering Department of the University of South Carolina. It is the Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science and Engineering. The requirements for the doctorate include course requirements, qualifying examination, comprehensive exam, and the dissertation. The program of study must be approved by the student’s dissertation committee. In addition, the dissertation must be defended in a public presentation.
